Johannesburg’s latest raw vegan potluck, in pictures

Last Thursday was the latest raw vegan potluck in Johannesburg. It’s a monthly event, and they keep getting better and better. This time it was at the Regent Hotel in Sandton, a very swish venue. The food was spectacular, as always. There was so much it was hard to get a taste of all of it.

The buffet table, full of raw vegan treats

I made moo shu vegetables. The cooked version involves cooked asian veggies in a sweet, spicy sauce, wrapped up in thin pancakes. For the raw potluck, I marinated the vegetables and dehydrated them (just for an hour or so) to soften them up, and wrapped them in baby red cabbage leaves. The sauce was deliciously sweet and spicy, made from a base of raisins, ginger, tamari and spices. You can see them on the left side of this table, next to a really delicious raw vegan curry.

The desserts were great too. Here’s a shot of a dessert plate, with chocolate pie, chocolate truffles, chocolate pudding, chocolate brownies, chocolate coated strawberries, etc. This plate doesn’t have the delicious raw ice cream on it– I think that was added later.

In addition to the feasting (some might say gluttony), we had a guest speaker at the potluck this time. It was Professor Celene Bernstein, author of ‘Health Seekers’ book. She spoke about supplements for a raw vegan diet, and had some for sale after the talk. Dr. Heidi van Loggerenberg, who organises the potluck evenings, also spoke about her own path to a raw vegan diet. It was a very interesting evening.

Don’t miss out on the next potluck. It’s a fun and informative (and did I mention DEEElicious) evening. It happens monthly, and I will post the date/location as soon as I know it. You can also check out the facebook group, ‘raw luck club’ for more information, including recipes.
